FRONTIER: Site Specific Cabaret - Seattle University

FRONTIER: Site Specific Cabaret
May 7 - 17, 2009
(Friday and Saturdays performed twice at 7:30 and 10:30pm)

Phoebe Hopkins and Nolan Morante. Photo by Garett Mukai, 2009.

Last year, Producer / Playwright / Director Ki Gottberg put together a Site Specific Cabaret that was performed all over the Seattle University Campus. Starting the audience inside the Lee Center for the Arts lobby, they then traveled across the campus and back. The show began with daylight and by the last performance had work lights outside in a courtyard near the theater. This year, the Site Specific Cabaret  comes earlier in the year and reverses its direction. Instead of taking the audience to the location that the writers chose for their pieces, the writers wrote around a pre-designed set (Carol Wolfe Clay) inside the Lee Center for the Performing Arts. Additionally, this year's Site Specific Cabaret plays host to Seattle University's first ever Student Playwrighting Competition. Ji Eun Kim and Riley Biehl's plays were two of the six pieces in the evenign of one-acts written by Ki Gottberg, Vince Delaney, Glenn Herganhahn, Cheryl Slean and with original composition by Casey James.

The six pieces (The Zero Footprint, Beyond the Frontier, The Wonders of the Swirling Night, Miranda, Family on a Sunday Drive, and The Eye is Burning) all deal, in some way, with the idea of Frontier. Whether this meant the frontier of a new world, or a new way of being, it is a fabulous game to try to determine how each one deals with 'Frontier' throughout the piece.

It is difficult to summarize the performance as a whole because it truly is six very individual and very unique pieces of theatre art that come to life before the audience. As is often the case with Seattle one-act festivals, the pieces don't necessarily make complete sense and one may not be able to figure out what each one is saying or even what the plot necessarily is. However, these six pieces take on the form of something much more human and visceral than is usually seen in these kinds of explorations. Ordinarily, a set of shows like this would be weird for weirdness' sake. These six, though, are incredibly weird but with such honesty and intention that they will continue to burrow into the audience's brains and try to figure themselves out.

Technically speaking, the series is spectacular. Lighting (D.M. Moon), set (Carol Wolfe Clay), costumes (Harmony J.K. Arnold, Andy Swanson, Annie Murphy, Lana Alisdairi, and Nicole Vukonich), and sound (Brendan Hogan) work together brilliantly. Though there is not much of a through line connecting the six pieces, there is a definite connection though the designs and the simple fact of being housed in the same set.

The show runs about two and a half hours with a ten minute intermission and, thanks to the originality of these pieces, does it without getting dull or tedious. Therefore, get your tickets now! It's a small house (fifty seats) so it will sell quickly. Call 206.296.2244 for tickets and reserve them ASAP!

BREAKING NEWS!

Alfred Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps added to Seattle Rep season

Seattle, WA – The 39 Steps, the hit Broadway comedy based on Alfred Hitchcock’s thriller, will replace Hay Fever in the 2009-10 season line-up, Seattle Repertory Theatre announced today.

“We had been negotiating for the rights to present
The 39 Steps, but nothing came through in the time frame needed to announce our upcoming season,” said Jerry Manning, Seattle Rep ProducingArtistic Director.

The theatre opted to make another selection,
Hay Fever, but has since learned that they will in fact be able to present The 39 Steps, in association with La Jolla Playhouse. La Jolla will mount the production in August before it moves to Seattle Rep in September.

“As much as we hate to make a change to the season, this is one we don’t want to pass up,” Manning said. “It’s something our patrons are really going to enjoy and financially is a smart decision for us.”

The 39 Steps features a cast of four actors playing over 150 characters in this fast-paced adventure: one part Hitchcock masterpiece, one part juicy spy novel and a dash of Monty Python. The thrilling, riotous comedy straight from Broadway contains every single legendary scene from the award-winning movie—including the chase on the Flying Scotsman, the escape on the Forth Bridge, the first theatrical bi-plane crash ever staged and the sensational death-defying finale in the London Palladium.

The 39 Steps will open the Seattle Repertory Theatre season with performances starting September 25. Season tickets packages are now on sale at www.seattlerep.org or by phone at 206-443-2222. Single tickets will go on sale in August.

Carrie Fisher's Wishful Drinking heads from Seattle to Broadway

Seattle, WA - On the heels of Wishful Drinking's Seattle extension—the play has been extended through May 9 at Seattle Rep—producers of Carrie Fisher's autobiographical comedy just announced the show will make its Broadway premiere at Roundabout Theatre Company in September.

Wishful Drinking marks the strongest sales Seattle Rep has seen since Lily Tomlin brought her one-woman show, The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe, to the theatre in 2000.

Wishful Drinking premiered in November 2006 at the Geffen Playhouse and enjoyed an extended engagement there through January 2007. Following that premiere, the show has completed successful runs at a number of not-for-profit theatre organizations around the country includingBerkeley Repertory Theatre (February 2008), Arena Stage (September 2008), Huntington Theatre Company (October 2008) and Seattle Repertory Theatre.

Tickets are on sale now for the few remaining performances of the Seattle run of Wishful Drinking.Tickets are available through the Seattle Repertory Theatre box office seven days a week at (206) 443-2222, toll-free at (877) 900-9285, as well as online at http://www.seattlerep.org/.

The Center of the Universe - Open Circle Theater

The Center of the Universe
Open Circle Theater
April 24 - May 23, 2009

Dustin Engstrom's The Center of the Universe is a strange and fascinating journey into a new world or two... or three...

Similar to Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere, the play centers on several characters whose lives have been fatefully intertwined by some of their special powers, political action and travel between worlds. When the key to the center of the universe was taken, the world split into many dimensions, all parallel but all different. So what would happen if one were to meet oneself in another world? Just one of the many questions posed by Engstrom's new play.

While perhaps a bit longer than it could have been and, therefore, picking up a little drag at times, the show brings up many fascinating questions and features some fantastic talent. Drew Sutherland (Bellhop) does a spectacular job of juggling several different characters throughout the performance. Conversely, Margaretta Lantz (Melissa) has but one personae, but brings her to life so vividly it's hard to take your eyes off here once she's appeared on stage.

Particularly outstanding is the composition and sound design. The style Ben Erickson used puts the audience immediately in the mind of a classic sci-fi film. The script certainly lends itself to the same feel, that good, wholesome sci-fi we all long for in this day of CGI and 3-D monsters at the cinema.

While the show falls rather flat at times, losing the audience with too much time between its epic points, when those moments occur, it becomes the fascinating and thought-provoking show it wants to be.

Walking with the Dinosaurs - Key Arena Presented by the BBC

The BBC Presents WALKING WITH THE DINOSAURS at Key Arena from April 29 - May 3, 2009!

The BBC's widely popular televsion series comes to life at Key Arena until May 3rd. Displaying 15 dinosaurs spanning 10 species and several million years, Walking with the Dinosaurs is a spectacular event for all ages, though especially for the kids! The large mechanical dinosaurs weigh in at about 1.6 tons each piece (about an average car) while some of the performers are operated by a suit-wearing puppeteers.

The show was conceived in 1996 when a team from the BBC was inspired to create a television series on paleontology. However, their financial blockade was substantial. Being not long after the premier of Jurassic Park (which only contained about 9 total minutes of dinosaur footage) which cost the studio about nine million dollars, the finances looked shakey. However, when the teams came together, gathering footage of landscapes, creating models of the dinosaurs and other creatures as well as rendering digital models for the filming, everything fell into place. After the television series premiered in 1999 and was immediately acclaimed as a hit, it wasn't a far leap to put their dinos on stage!

And now they're here for Seattle Audiences until SUNDAY! Buy your tickets now!

Sunday in the Park with George - 5th Avenue Theatre

Sunday in the Park with George

5th Avenue Theatre

Tickets and Information

April 21 - May 10, 2009

“Composition.  Tension.  Balance.  Light.  Harmony.” (Sunday in the Park with George)  [need something else here]  Seurat, and his intriguing legacy, is what Sondheim sculpts and forms into the artistic masterpiece that is Sunday in the Park with George, that was so faithfully recreated here at the 5th Ave. from its first appearance as a revival in the West End of Broadway two years ago.  It got five Oliver Awards, nine Tony nominations, and one Drama Desk Award for their highly visual and interactive conceptualization of one of Sondheim’s most minimalistic works.

Hugh Panaro and Billie Wildrick. Photo by Chris Bennion 2009.

Originally conceived for a performance in the Menier Chocolate Factory (yes, a chocolate factory converted into a theater!), the production team led by director Sam Buntrock is responsible for the production that was seen in London, the West End in New York, and what can be seen now at the 5th Avenue Theatre.  Buntrock’s background in animation, teamed with Timothy Bird and Knifedge The Creative Network’s digital video projection systems creates an artistic element rarely seen in such traditional shows as Sunday in the Park with George.  All of these individual theatrical points, when seen as a whole with proper lighting and perspective, allow the eye to combine them on David Farley’s set as Seurat’s paintings allow the viewer to perceive contrasting red and blue dots as a purple flower.

While Sam Buntrock brought his production to Seattle, he allowed the almost fully Pacific Northwestern cast (excepting Hugh Panaro as the title character) to make it their own.  Seattle theatre-goers will be happy to see faces they will recognize such as Anne Allgood (Nurse/ Mrs./ Harriet Pawling) and Allen Fitzpatrick (Jules/Bob Greenberg) from countless local productions.  The cast pulls together an extraordinarily tight ensemble that literally makes Seurat’s painting come to life.

One kink in the consistently spectacular production is the artificial sound elements at the beginning of the second act (Note: There is a second act.  Akin to Sondheim’s Into the Woods, the first act, though seemingly conclusive, is not the end of the story.)  While in keeping with the 100 year gap between the first and second acts, Ken Travis’ sound design is too abrasive as the first and only sound that is heard in the production.

Sunday in the Park with George is a beautifully sculpted piece of theatrical art that envelopes the audience in composition, tension, balance, light, and harmony.  While being a very enlightening and innovative production, it is not one to be taken lightly—and clocking in at three hours, we recommend a good double shot of espresso.
