Walking with the Dinosaurs - Key Arena Presented by the BBC

The BBC Presents WALKING WITH THE DINOSAURS at Key Arena from April 29 - May 3, 2009!

The BBC's widely popular televsion series comes to life at Key Arena until May 3rd. Displaying 15 dinosaurs spanning 10 species and several million years, Walking with the Dinosaurs is a spectacular event for all ages, though especially for the kids! The large mechanical dinosaurs weigh in at about 1.6 tons each piece (about an average car) while some of the performers are operated by a suit-wearing puppeteers.

The show was conceived in 1996 when a team from the BBC was inspired to create a television series on paleontology. However, their financial blockade was substantial. Being not long after the premier of Jurassic Park (which only contained about 9 total minutes of dinosaur footage) which cost the studio about nine million dollars, the finances looked shakey. However, when the teams came together, gathering footage of landscapes, creating models of the dinosaurs and other creatures as well as rendering digital models for the filming, everything fell into place. After the television series premiered in 1999 and was immediately acclaimed as a hit, it wasn't a far leap to put their dinos on stage!

And now they're here for Seattle Audiences until SUNDAY! Buy your tickets now!

Sunday in the Park with George - 5th Avenue Theatre

Sunday in the Park with George

5th Avenue Theatre

Tickets and Information

April 21 - May 10, 2009

“Composition.  Tension.  Balance.  Light.  Harmony.” (Sunday in the Park with George)  [need something else here]  Seurat, and his intriguing legacy, is what Sondheim sculpts and forms into the artistic masterpiece that is Sunday in the Park with George, that was so faithfully recreated here at the 5th Ave. from its first appearance as a revival in the West End of Broadway two years ago.  It got five Oliver Awards, nine Tony nominations, and one Drama Desk Award for their highly visual and interactive conceptualization of one of Sondheim’s most minimalistic works.

Hugh Panaro and Billie Wildrick. Photo by Chris Bennion 2009.

Originally conceived for a performance in the Menier Chocolate Factory (yes, a chocolate factory converted into a theater!), the production team led by director Sam Buntrock is responsible for the production that was seen in London, the West End in New York, and what can be seen now at the 5th Avenue Theatre.  Buntrock’s background in animation, teamed with Timothy Bird and Knifedge The Creative Network’s digital video projection systems creates an artistic element rarely seen in such traditional shows as Sunday in the Park with George.  All of these individual theatrical points, when seen as a whole with proper lighting and perspective, allow the eye to combine them on David Farley’s set as Seurat’s paintings allow the viewer to perceive contrasting red and blue dots as a purple flower.

While Sam Buntrock brought his production to Seattle, he allowed the almost fully Pacific Northwestern cast (excepting Hugh Panaro as the title character) to make it their own.  Seattle theatre-goers will be happy to see faces they will recognize such as Anne Allgood (Nurse/ Mrs./ Harriet Pawling) and Allen Fitzpatrick (Jules/Bob Greenberg) from countless local productions.  The cast pulls together an extraordinarily tight ensemble that literally makes Seurat’s painting come to life.

One kink in the consistently spectacular production is the artificial sound elements at the beginning of the second act (Note: There is a second act.  Akin to Sondheim’s Into the Woods, the first act, though seemingly conclusive, is not the end of the story.)  While in keeping with the 100 year gap between the first and second acts, Ken Travis’ sound design is too abrasive as the first and only sound that is heard in the production.

Sunday in the Park with George is a beautifully sculpted piece of theatrical art that envelopes the audience in composition, tension, balance, light, and harmony.  While being a very enlightening and innovative production, it is not one to be taken lightly—and clocking in at three hours, we recommend a good double shot of espresso.

TAPROOT THEATRE PRESENTS

AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS,

ONE OF THREE REGIONAL PREMIERES THIS SEASON

Action-packed adventure tale opens on May 22

SEATTLE – April 16, 2009 – Get ready for a madcap, cross-continental race against time packed with adventure, danger, suspense and love at Taproot Theatre Company with the regional premiere of Around the World in 80 Days. Jules Verne’s 19th century novel comes to life before your eyes in Mark Brown’s wildly theatrical adaptation. A bet to travel around the world in 80 days is a fool’s venture in 1872, unless you happen to be named Phileas Fogg. Villainy, a damsel in distress and an array of transportation disasters are met with Victorian virtue and a precision pocket watch in Brown’s comic play that’s part James Bond, part Lord Peter Wimsey and pure fun.Around the World in 80 Days, directed by Scott Nolte, opens on May 22 and runs through June 20 with low-price previews on May 20 & 21, plus a pay-what-you-can performance on May 27.

Around the World in 80 Days had its world premiere at the Utah Shakespeare Festival in September 2001, was work-shopped at the Orlando Shakespeare Festival in May 2002, and had its off-Broadway premiere this past July. The playwright is the award-winning writer behind The Trial of Ebenezer Scrooge, which Taproot Theatre presented in 2005, and The Little Prince (co-written with Paul Kiernen), among other works. His acting credits include Out of Sight with George Clooney and Jennifer Lopez, Holy Man with Eddie Murphy, Diagnosis Murder and Ally McBeal.

A largely true-to-the-book yet theatrical adaptation of the classic novel, Around the World in 80 Days takes five actors and has all but one—the actor playing Fogg—rapidly transforming from one character to another nearly in the blink of an eye.

“Brown is a playwright who loves the classics and the sense of wonder created by reinventing them onstage,” said Nolte.  “As an actor himself he knows how much fun it is to surprise the audience – hence we have 5 actors playing over 30 characters, with the fewest props and set pieces possible so the audience’s imagination and sense of humor is engaged too. I think our audiences are in for a terrific mix of adventure, delight and storytelling.”

After Around the World in 80 Days, Taproot Theatre’s 2009 Mainstage season continues with Smoke on the Mountain Homecoming, the third installment of the beloved Sanders family series (July 8-August 8), and Enchanted April, Matthew Barber’s adaptation of Elizabeth von Arnim’s 1920s novel (September 23-October 24).

Support for Taproot Theatre’s 2009 season is generously provided by 4Culture, ArtsFund, The Charles Simonyi Fund for Arts and Sciences, Washington State Arts Commission, Nesholm Family Foundation and PONCHO. Thanks to The Upper Crust, our Opening Night sponsor, and Romio’s Pizza and Pasta and Dry Soda, our Pizza and a Play sponsors.

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde - ACT

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
ACT
Tickets and Information
April 10 – May 10, 2009

Chuang Tzu, a 300’s B.C.E. Chinese philosopher wrote a story paraphrased here:
Last night I dreamed I was a butterfly. Now, I do not know if I am a man who dreamed I was a butterfly, or a butterfly who is dreaming I am a man.

The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson has been told and retold in countless versions from the 1941 Spencer Tracy film, to the 1997 Leslie Bricusse and Frank Wildhorn Broadway musical (eventually starring David Hasslehoff), Jekyll and Hyde and even to Seattle’s own Open Circle Theater’s recent movement and dance piece, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. The children’s television show Wishbone has portrayed the story and hundreds of tales using the personality splitting motif have popped up over the years. Now, Jeffery Hatcher (well-known for adapting to stage Tuesdays with Morrie as well as penning many other stage plays, books, and achieving several major literary awards) brings the chilling story to life once more in a rather original light.

Deborah Fialko, Brandon Whitehead, Bradford Farwell, David Anthony Lewis and David Pichette. Photo by Chris Bennion, 2009.

In most of the existing versions of the story a love-interest for Dr. Jekyll is introduced on whom Mr. Hyde will prey leading to an inevitable confrontation between the two sides of the man. Firstly, this love-interest does not exist in the original Stevenson novella but rather is created in these retellings, as director R. Hamilton Wright puts it, for “salability, trying to give Jekyll and Hyde someone to tell the story to” (from the Encore interview). However, in Hatcher’s adaptation, the love-interest is for Hyde, not for Jekyll, and is a much less conventional love story, adding a certain mystery and tempting immorality to the adventure.

On the whole, Wright’s direction is fantastic. As a thirty-year veteran of the Seattle Theatre scene, he knows his way around a play. Where the show falls flat is in the duplicity of Hyde and the feeling that much of the energy is spread too thin. While at certain moments the multiple Hydes adds greatly to the danger for Dr. Jekyll (Bradford Farwell), overall it seems to disperse the immanent threat rather than redouble it four-fold. This is not to say, however, that the performance itself falls short. On the contrary, the show is a very enjoyable and an exciting two-hour ride. The truly ensemble cast all bring forth their most potent pity and spite in this production.

Technically speaking, the show is a symphony of precision. Flying doors in and out, bringing forth laboratories from the ground and evoking the spirit of the moment through light and sound and gorgeously accurate costumes, the designers (Matthew Smucker on Scenic Design, Brendan Patrick Hogan on Sound, Rick Paulsen on Lights and Marcia Dixcy Jory with Costumes) bring the heat in each of their elements.

Though there has yet to be an adaptation of The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde that sticks faithfully and truly to the story (this production as no exception), an exciting story is worth much more than a necessarily precise one. While at times dispersing the energy of the action rather than focusing it, this show does wrap itself up well and leave the audience guessing, by the finale, and reaching for their copy of Chuang Tzu’s “Butterfly.”

Breakin' Hearts & Takin' Names - Seattle Rep

Breakin’ Hearts & Takin’ Names

Seattle Repertory Theater

Tickets and Information

April 9 – May 10 2009

Kevin Kling and Simone Perrin graced the Seattle Repertory stage last year with their two-person show How? How? Why? Why? Why?, based on Kling’s traumatic motorcycle accident and what he has learned from it.  Kling’s charming and unpretentious storytelling and Perrin’s accordion-and-vocals compositions captured the hearts of Seattle audiences, and the Rep commissioned a second show from them—this time about hearts, captured and otherwise.  As the title indicates, the stories in this show revolve around love—but of all kinds, romantic, familial, friendly, and often surprising, unexpected and always welcome.

From the very first moment the lights come up and Kling smiles at the audience, we’re hooked.  He meanders from grandmother to father, Easy Bob to 90-year Rose—and he always portrays these people so clearly that it is easy to imagine that we know them as well. Kling is a master storyteller and humorist, who makes his stories come so vividly to life—without acting them out—that it seems as if he has some mystic link into our imaginations. His stories wind through topics, occasionally running off on tangents, but always coming home to a point that is spoken profoundly but without pretension; a simple, honest truth that is often both sad and joyful.  His stories have tender and striking moments throughout, but are thoroughly balanced by his open sense of humor and perfect comedic timing, which had the opening night audience in nearly-constant laughter.

Simone Perrin & Kevin Kling. Photo by Chris Bennion.

Simone Perrin’s tightrope voice, straight out of a 1920s jazz club, is perfectly in place in the foggy smoke-filled memories that make up Kling’s stories. She sings jazz standards, Edith Piaf, and some of Kling’s own poems which she set to music.  The integration of her music and the text of the play is an apt combination of mediums that brings the stories even more fully to life.  Occasionally she will step in to Kling’s stories—for example, to speak his grandmother’s words—but in everything she does, she has, like Kling, a casual but captivating air on stage.  Their interplay is laced with humor and caring, and extends to the audience as well; both these performers speak to the whole house as though we were all sitting closely together in their living room.

Braden Abraham, the Rep’s rising star, directs the show with a light hand, in collaboration with Kling and Perrin.  Abraham can have very different styles, from the recent Betrayal and its pregnant Pinter pauses to the rapid-fire storytelling of this show; both work very effectively to convey the mood of the plays.  As a director Abraham can clearly switch styles to fit plays easily, and this play is handled with the right touch.

The technical elements serve the play well; the lights (L.B. Morse) are simply what is needed, with only a couple fancy effects.  The set (also Morse) is rather less obsequious than the standard Rep set, but is still more dressed than it needs to be.  However, Kling and Perrin could play on a bare stage and still charm, and if the set is perhaps more full than necessary, it nevertheless fits the atmosphere of the production as it should.

Currently, both of the Rep’s spaces are housing autobiographical, bittersweet stories of people’s lives—next door to Breakin’ Hearts & Takin’ Names is Carrie Fisher’s Wishful Drinking—and if you are looking for laughter, tears or just a good story, both these shows will deliver.

Tuesdays with Morrie - Taproot Theatre Company

Tuesdays with Morrie

Taproot Theatre Company

March 25 – April 25, 2009

Tickets and Information

Mitch Albom’s stories about his time with his professor and mentor, Morrie Schwartz, make up one of the most beloved memoirs of all time, Tuesdays with Morrie. I can hardly imagine any student coming out of a high school these days without some exposure to Albom’s novel. I was never required to read it for a class, but at least three teachers in my high school required the reading and I know of two throughout my college career who also used the text in class. Albom’s storytelling and recounting of the amazing man who was Morrie Schwartz is as beautiful as was Schwartz’ outlook on life. Now these stories have come to life across America. Beginning with the off-Broadway premier of the stage adaptation (Mitch Albom and playwright Jeffrey Hatcher) in 2002, Tuesdays with Morrie has swept the nation in the past seven years and is now on our doorstep at Taproot Theatre Company.

Nolan Palmer and Aaron Lamb in Tuesdays with Morrie. Photo by Erik Stuhaug 2009.

Directed by Karen Lund (Associate Artistic Director at Taproot), Tuesdays with Morrie comes simply and classily to the stage. For a grand story about a simple couple of men, a skilled hand is required and Lund provides it. Aaron Lamb (playing Mitch Albom) shows his transformation from his college “tough-guy” personae through the rough-and-tumble sports journalist into the thoroughly human man we come to love with precision and grace. Similarly, Nolan Palmer (playing Morrie Schwartz) is a master of the transformation. As Morrie ages, Palmer’s body seems to age with resolve to become the character. Palmer and Lamb bring such a wealth of skill to the table as would warm any director or audiences’ hearts and Lund’s work with them both is a great accomplishment.

Mark Lund’s set and sound design is also very efficient and precise. The set is wonderfully compact and efficient. While in some instances the audio elements pull more focus than they ought, the composition and execution of the sound and soundtrack is quite lovely.

Tuesdays with Morrie has been one of the most heartwarming stories literature has had to offer for many years, and now offers the same warmth via the stage. One must be prepared to walk out of the theater asking oneself the same questions Morrie asks Mitch about life, love and what is really important to be the most fulfilled person one can be.

Art Isn’t Easy—In Seattle Or Anywhere Else!

Seattle’s 5th Avenue Theatre launches “Connecting the Dots,” a celebration of visual art in conjunction with “Sunday in the Park with George

SEATTLE – The 5th Avenue Theatre, Seattle’s premier home of musical theater, is pleased to announce the Connecting the Dots program, a unique effort to highlight the work of Seattle’s visual artists through commissioned work, public forums, gallery receptions, museum partnerships and artists-in-schools programs, all focused on the Georges Seurat masterpiece “Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte.”

Seurat’s painting was the inspiration for Sunday in the Park with George, the Pulitzer-prize winning musical by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine, which explores what it takes to create a masterpiece—and what it costs to love an artist. This production opens April 21 and is helmed by Olivier- and Tony-nominated director Sam Buntrock, who brings his design team to the stage of The 5th to recreate the astonishing computer animated projections that stunned audiences and critics in London and New York.

With Connecting the Dots, The 5th reaches out to the artists and patrons of the visual art community to explore how contemporary Seattle artists deal with the cost—in time, money, and personal life—of creating art.

In 2008, the Theatre commissioned six local artists, Michiko Tanaka, Leslie Stoner, Eric Olson, Deborah Bell, Amy Johnson, and Sheryl Westergreen to create original works inspired by Seurat’s masterpiece. The canvases and sculpture of these six artists are featured at Seattle’s Benham Gallery through the run of the show and during the upcoming Gala—A Night at the 5th—the pieces will be auctioned off, with half of the money raised going to the artists.

In addition, Connecting the Dots is sponsoring a series of pre-show receptions at various galleries within walking distance of the Theatre. These events take place every Tuesday-Saturday through the run of the show from 5:30 to 6:30, and offer our audiences the relaxed experience of viewing contemporary art over wine and light snacks, as well as learning about how Seattle’s galleries interact with the larger artistic community.

The 5th Avenue also has partnerships with several Puget Sound museums, including SAM, Bellevue Art Museum, Tacoma Art Museum, Museum of Glass, and the Henry Art Gallery, to provide museum patrons an opportunity to purchase tickets to the show, with a portion of each ticket going back to the museum.

Other programs include artist-in-school classes focused on the Seurat painting, a “Color and Light” exhibition featuring student art pieces, a Town Hall public forum on the state of Seattle art, a book club led by the 5th’s artistic director David Armstrong, and a tour through the Olympic Sculpture Park with Armstrong and Marisa Sanchez, Assistant Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art.

For details on all of these programs, go to the program’s website, 5thavenue.org/dots.
